Hamlet seems to be closer to his mother in this film, and he seems truly hurt by what his mother has done. I feel that Shakespeare would be proud of this version. The setting staying true to the play in Denmark and it gives it such an authentic feel. The choices in actors was really well done as a whole for this film. I am actually not a fan of Glen Close, but I was pleasantly surprised with her take on the character. Glenn Close gives the character Gertrude a much more likable quality. The actor who plays Polonius gave the character a creepy way about him, it might have had a lot to do with the severe widow’s peak though. Gibson does a good job of portraying a lost young man, gone crazy by not only the death of his father, but the burden of his mother marrying his uncle, his father's murderer. Hamlet had more of a demeanor like a young boy, with Gibson’s wide blue eyes gaping at the screen. This gave him an innocence, and for some reason it really made me sympathetic to the character. In almost every scene, Hamlet has light on his face. Even the scene where Hamlet sees his father for the first time, the moonlight shines on the top of the castle. There was a lot of light in many of the scenes. I got exactly what I was expecting in this aspect of the film.ĭespite the fact that this is a tragedy, this adaptation had a whimsical way about it. The character Hamlet is a little deranged, so this role seems perfect for Gibson’s reputation. He is known for doing well with roles of crazy characters. I gravitated towards this adaptation because I am a big fan of Mel Gibson. It was even nominated for an Academy Award for the costumes. Franco Zeffirelli’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, stays true to tradition, with the time, setting, and costumes.
